Notification type: Service Update
Product: Symantec LiveState Patch Manager
Version: 6.0.x
Overview
When upgrading a Symantec Antivirus (SAV) 8.1 client
that is installed on a LiveState Delivery, Patch Manager,
or Recovery Manager server, catastrophic data loss
in LiveState can occur. This only affects SAV 8.l
clients; no SAV server versions or other SAV client
versions are affected by this defect.
During an upgrade of the SAV client, some code in
the 8.1 version is run that causes large-scale file
deletion in the c:\Symantec folder, which is the default
install path for LiveState Delivery, Patch Manager,
and Recovery Manager.
Recommendation:
The best way to handle this is through prevention,
since once the SAV upgrade happens, it is necessary
to completely reinstall the LiveState software and
re-populate the package depot. To avoid data loss,
use the following steps when upgrading SAV 8.1:
1. Stop all LiveState services (using 'delivery stop'
on a command line for Delivery and Patch Manager,
or 'recovery stop' for Recovery Manager).
2. Rename the c:\Symantec folder to some other name
(for example c:\symantec_temporary).
3. Perform the upgrade from SAV client 8.1 to whichever
version you would like (usually the latest version).
4. Undo the renaming of the c:\symantec folder to
set it back to its original name.
5. Restart the LiveState services (using 'delivery
start' on a command line for Delivery and Patch Manager,
or 'recovery start' for Recovery Manager).
